SG Private Banking Gallery Alliance Française de Singapour 25th June - 4th July 2005 (Opening on the 24th June, Friday 2005)
The “Europe: Beauty in every corner” project aims to document a specific facet of each of the European state members. Rather than focusing on the most obvious and common monuments and aspects of the European states, the project records the more subtle aspects of European life and environment.
This exhibition showcases the project’s first unit, namely: “Greece: Tranquility”. Visitors to Greece have often described their fascination of the Greek “natural” and “ancient” landscape. The dazzling blue skies, the ancient temples, people’s deeply rooted religious faith, and the slow pace of life, all make their mark on every visitor.
In this unit, Marios decomposes these elements into simple black and white pictorials that capture each visual element of Greece for the viewer to examine. No attempt is made to capture it as an ordinary colourful image or as part of the Greek daily life. Instead every attempt is directed at provoking the viewer to question what it would be like if they were there, how they would have experienced the land’s tranquility, and what it would be like had they been immersed in the environment in real-life.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marios Pittas was born in 1966 on the island of Cyprus. At the age of twenty-one, Marios moved to London, England, where he obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of London. In 1993, Marios moved to Singapore where he is a permanent resident. He lives with his wife, Ching Siew, their three children, Zoe, Louiza and Theodore, two budgies and an unknown number of fish.
Marios has been taking photographs since the age of 8. Through the years, he has photographed a large variety of subjects ranging from classic pictorials to experimentations with photo composites, pinhole photography and others.
Having lived for more than 15 years in “far away” lands, and frequently conducting small-scale ethnographic studies, it is no surprise that Marios’ current photo-interests are people, their environment and their interactions with the environment.
Marios first presented some of his photo work in a group exhibition at the Singapore History Museum as part of the Museum’s celebration for “International Friendship Day”, 3-17th April 2004 (titled: “Faces of the world”). The exhibition included 9 selections from the series: “Europe: Beauty in every corner” (taken from “Unit 1 - Greece: Tranquility”, and “Unit 2 - Cyprus: Passing Time”).
The series aims to document a specific facet of each of the European state members. Rather than focusing on the most obvious and common monuments and aspects of the European states, the project records the more subtle aspects of European life and environment.
Marios’ current and past photo work can be viewed in his web site: www.photo-orama.com

ACM Multimedia 2005 Interactive Art Program Singapore, November 6-12, 2005 http://acmmm05.comp.nus.edu.sg/artprogram.htm
Sponsored by ACM SIGMM, SIGGRAPH, and SIGCOMM. In collaboration with Leonardo
ACM Multimedia 2005 is the premier annual multimedia conference, covering all aspects of multimedia computing. The ACM MM Interactive Art Program seeks to bring together the arts and multimedia communities to create the stage to explore, discuss, and push the limits for the advancement of both multimedia technology through the arts, and the arts through multimedia technology.
The Interactive Art Program will consist of a *conference track* and an *art exhibition*. We invite artists working with digital media and researchers in technical areas to submit their original contributions to the following tracks:
* Conference track: we solicit papers describing interactive multimedia art works, tools, applications, and technical approaches for creative uses of multimedia content and technology. Emphasis will be given to novel works that use a rich variety of media and those that are interactive, particularly works that exploit non-conventional human-computer interfaces or sensors in new and emerging areas. We strongly encourage papers with a strong technical content written by artists. Topics of interest (but not limited to):
- Interactive storytelling and authoring - Multimedia content analysis (for automatic video editing, search art, etc.) - Multimedia software as art (collaborative and open source) - Network analysis and network art - Tangible interfaces for art - Tools for multimedia performance - Immersive multimedia - Perceptual, haptic, affective, and multi-modal interfaces and architectures for art - Sonification and electronic music - Context aware multi-modal sensing - Computational applications of art media theory and semiotics - Experiential systems - Generative multimedia art - Mobile multimedia art - Museum - Sensors for multimedia art - Novel multimedia performance instruments
* Multimedia art exhibition: "Presence/Absence." We seek art works that use multimedia to explore issues of location, relocation and dislocation, particularly where multimedia technology overcomes or reinforces physical presence or separation. The emphasis for the exhibition is on interactive art works that realize powerful artistic concepts using multimedia content and technologies.
Best Paper Awards will be given with an emphasis on novel uses of multimedia technology.
Accepted papers for the exhibition and conference track will be published in the ACM Multimedia Conference proceedings. A selection of the works accepted will be published in a Leonardo Gallery in the Leonardo Journal and on line in the Leonardo Electronic Almanac.
The conference will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Singapore. The art exhibition will be held at LASALLE-SIA Gallery, Singapore.
