Tucked away in a tranquil corner of the Kompleks Kraf Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Conlay, a community of some 22 artists work amidst lush gardens and fountains. A haven of creativity and camaraderie, the Artists’ Colony stands apart from the Kompleks in 11 open-plan wakaf, airy gazebo-like huts serving as both gallery and studio to the artists. Here, visitors can watch the artists paint, indulge in casual chitchat and leisurely view their collections. Artists will eat together, handle inquiries for absent neighbours and go for outings with each other’s families.
From this warm and welcoming community, 5 close friends have come together to present their works across the Causeway. Representing the strong dynamism present in modern Malaysian painting, their works are characterized by individual style, figuration, expressive brushstrokes and vivid colouration. A strong Malaysian flavour can be observed in Maamor’s watercolour depictions of kampungs and night scenes, Harris’s large Malay women, Nizar’s haunting masks, Shukri’s emotional and expressive faces, and Samsudin’s rippling images of his family, incorporating Malay poetry.
