You are cordially invited to the opening of Reverence a homage to the ordinary a solo exhibition of oil paintings and works on paper by Ho Chee Lick Guest of honour: Mr. Kwok Kian Chow Director, Singapore Art Museum TUESDAY 10th September 2002 7.30 pm Utterly Art Exhibition Space 208 South Bridge Road Level 2, Singapore 058757 Tel: 6226 2605 Email: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg Mon-Sat 11.30 am - 8 pm; Sun 12 noon - 5.30 pm The exhibition runs through to Sunday 29th September The dark, expressionistic paintings of Ho Chee Lick appear to suggest a turbulent, even tormented, inner state of the artist, with their sombre colours and powerful, surging brushstrokes. That the painter is a happily married academic with one child living comfortably in Tiong Bahru might indicate that this interpretation lacks foundation. What could be conceived of as internal turmoil is no more than a desire on his part to dramatize the familiar, to imbue his subjects with an atmosphere of heroism not commonly associated with the mundane. Chee Lick respects the honest and the homely: he elevates the prosaic with a flourish that gives them the due attention they deserve as subjects for painting; he validates their reason for being with his nod to their humble existence and functionality; he pays homage to the ordinary.
