Nadine, Looking Glass and FoAM invite you to enrol in the experimental media workshops in Brussels and its surroundings from May to December 2004. Below you will find a brief description of .x-med-k. series of workshops, as well as information about the application procedure.
Please circulate this information to people who you think could be interested in the .x-med-k. programme...
Nadine, Looking Glass and FoAM have joined forces to offer a heterogeneous series of workshops to artists interested in experimental use of digital media and technologies. The .x-med-k. series provides a broad insight into techniques and processes used in cutting-edge media art worldwide. Belgian and international experts will guide the workshop participants through hands-on sessions in visual programming, audiovisual media manipulation, mixed reality applications, connected performances, basic electronics and responsive environments. The practical workshops will be informed by a theoretical and historical overview of media art. The .x-med-k. participants will be able to contextualise the acquired skills through collaborative projects, as well as get professional support in the conception, development and presentation of their own projects. Looking Glass will produce and exhibit the projects related to the public space; Nadine will focus on projects developed for the internet; and FoAM will assist the participants in the production of mixed reality performances and environments.
The interested artists can enroll for either: - individual workshops - a series of workshops (with a minimum of 2) followed by a public presentation.
Tuition for individual workshops is 50 EUR, while following a series of workshops is free of charge, if the requirement of a public presentation is fulfilled. A registration form will be online soon - in the meantime, you can enroll by sending an e-mail to info@n... with your name, address, short CV and motivation. Deadline for enrollment is 14 days before the beginning of each workshop, with the exception of the deadline for the first workshop (Introduction to visual programming) which is on the 15th of May 2004.
The workshops:
1. Introduction to visual programming: MAX/MSP/JITTER (24 May - 28 May, Nadine)
By means of visual programming environments, the participants will learn to develop a number of tools for digital manipulation of audiovisual material. The workshop will provide a thorough introduction to max and the extensions, together with objects that are used for programming realtime audio (msp) and video synthesis (jitter), as well as open-source solutions (pure data (pd) and Blender). Participants will work with their own material and be taught the basics of motion tracking with different sensors and cameras. The goal of the workshop is to develop individual ideas into audio/video/web installations.
2. Audio-visual media: sampling, editing, mastering (21 June - 25 June, Nadine)
The workshop aims at teaching artists the basic principles of audio and video editing in order provide them with the tools they will need to develop experimental media productions. A series of specialized tutors, active in the field of media art, will lead the workshop. Participants will be expected to bring along their own audio and video material. Various applications for editing will be available for participants to use: Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Media Cleaner, Peak, Pro Tools..
3. Mixed reality media worlds: audiovisual media and human-computer-interaction (16 July - 25 July, FoAM - remote location in Belgium)
The workshop participants will be joined by FoAM collaborators to form a heterogeneous group of artists and technologists working together towards a common goal: designing a compelling, responsive experience by fusing the digital with the physical worlds. During the workshop, rich media worlds will be designed and connected to the 'physical reality' through electronic interfaces. The work will be conducted by multidisciplinary teams who will design and implement at least one Mixed Reality (MR) experiment.
4. Connected: php, networks, streaming (20 September-24 September, Nadine)
Several network related technologies need an introduction: systems, topologies, scripting... The possibilities offered by wireless technologies and audio-visual streaming will be explained and explored. In a one-week practical, hands-on sessions with several experts from the artistic programming field, the connected theme with its technological and artistic impacts will be brought to the participants in an accessible and understandable way.
5. Electronics for artists: hardware hacking (04 October - 08 October, Nadine)
Home-made electronics are extensively used by new media artists. Not only are artists expected to expand their technical skills to modify electronic parts for their individual projects, but their knowledge of electronics will assist communication in collaborative projects (in which basic knowledge of all technologies involved is a prerequisite). The basics of soldering and designing simple electronic circuits will be taught, as well as existing sensor technologies and the construction of sensors. These electronic devices will be connected to programming environments such as pd and max. Participants will use their own artistic concepts to experiment with interactive audio-visual installations. and specifically the real-world input gathered from electronic devices.
6. Responsive environments: sensor data analysis and interpretation, perceptual modelling (15 November - 28 November, FoAM / Nadine)
Learning what it means to make a dynamic and immersive responsive environment is the goal the workshop facilitators will attempt to achieve. The workshop will take place in a studio setting, working with maximum 5 artists per week. The participants will learn how to use and modify FoAM's responsive media system, thereby developing their own responsive objects or environments. Particular attention will be devoted to the translation between real-world input (acquired through sensing technologies) and the audiovisual media output. At the end of the the two weeks, a public experiment will be conducted, focusing on the importance of user-testing and involving the public in the development process.
7. Artistic realisation of public media art accompanied by theoretical/historical evening sessions (Throughout the year, Looking Glass / Nadine)
Many artists venturing into the field of new media experience a lack of knowledge about historical and contemporary examples of media art, which sometimes leads to uninspired and imitative installations. The aim is to provide artists with the necessary background knowledge to situate and analyse their own work. In a series of evening sessions an overview of the historical development of media art will be presented, together with technical analysis and reconstruction of basic techniques used in the past. Based on this series, as well as the experience gathered in the practical workshops, Looking Glass will guide the artists toward a realisation of media art projects in public spaces in Brussels.

NEWS RELEASE (EXCERPTS) Fresh, thought-provoking works on show at LASALLE-SIA Graduation showcase
Tuesday, 4 May 2004 The rigorous training students receive at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts culminate in an exciting series of graduation exhibitions and performances from 4 May to 29 August 2004. Selected final-year works from the diploma and degree programmes in this showcase not only offer the public an intriguing insight into the students’ creative world, but also present employment opportunities for prospective employers. Companies from the creative industries are specially invited to this showcase to gain a first-hand glimpse of the creative talent set to contribute to the growth of the creative industries.
Each year, graduating students unfailingly create thought-provoking, cutting-edge works – this year is no exception. Visitors can expect to see a diverse range of works from Communication Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Multimedia Art, Dance, Drama, Technical Arts and Music.
Subjects explored run the gamut from the deeply personal to wide-ranging social issues to conceptual concerns. Some students confront thorny subject matters head-on; for example, Graphic Design student Amy Ong delves into the topic of verbal abuse for her campaign against emotional child abuse, which will be shown at GD:MMA – Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Graphic Design and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Multimedia Art Joint Graduation Exhibition. Meanwhile, final-year Drama and Technical Arts diploma students present revolutionary theorist and theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht’s masterpiece The Caucasian Chalk Circle, where contentious ideas that challenge the concepts of art and justice are debated throughout the play. The parable subverts an ancient Chinese tale in which two women claim the same child. The politically-charged production is a complex example of Brecht’s epic theatre.
As the students graduate, they will embark onto the next phase of their creative journey – as practitioners making significant contributions to the growing creative industries.

Perhaps Chinese calligraphy is the art form which best distills the essence of Chinese culture in its simple and straightforward application of ink on paper. Within its rigid discipline of characters, strokes and techniques, the master calligrapher still finds great freedom of expression in the movement of brush over surface, such that calligraphy can be considered one of the earliest abstract arts. Above all, Chinese calligraphy is thought to be the most revealing of an individual’s personality, such is the necessary degree of internalization of the craft to its practitioner – it is a crystallization of his innate nature, his being. Singaporean sculptor Chua Boon Kee now embarks on a momentous task, to translate the time-honoured practice of calligraphy into sculpture. How will he be able to capture the movement of line, the spontaneity of brushstroke and the combination of characters into three dimensions? Drawing from several years of experience, Boon Kee will be mustering all his skills and ingenuity in his first solo exhibition to capture the essential spirit of calligraphy in sculptural form.
