LASALLE-SIA announces plans to realise its vision as Singapore's University of the Arts
LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts announced today new initiatives that will raise the international profile of Singapore’s Creative Industries and change the landscape of arts education. These initiatives are hot on the heels of LASALLE-SIA’s first step towards its vision to be Singapore’s university of the arts when it achieved Accredited Institution Status from The Open University (UK) in March this year and subsequently the validation of all of its 32 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The validation of all of its current undergraduate and postgraduate degrees was completed in three phases with the last group of eight Design undergraduate and postgraduate degrees successfully validated on 24 September 2004.
Said Professor Robert Ely FRSA, President & CEO of LASALLE-SIA: “The next phase of our strategic development involves:
Development of new innovative postgraduate programmes Enhancement of research activities by creating new knowledge or applying and testing current knowledge Attracting and retaining high-calibre faculty members at professorial level Establishing International collaborations and partnerships The College aims to increase its international student enrolment from its current 30 per cent to 70 per cent by 2008 with total student enrolment doubling from 1,500 to 3,000 by the same year. LASALLE-SIA will move to its new city campus with state-of-the-art facilities by 2006. Work on our new Singapore Campus has already started and the building design was recently featured at the Architecture International Biennale, in Venice, Italy.
"LASALLE-SIA's aim to be a premier Singapore-based international arts institution will add to the vibrancy of Singapore's Global Schoolhouse Programme. Besides significantly increasing their foreign student intake, LASALLE-SIA will also be developing new programmes and research activities to create new areas of thought leadership. We welcome their growth plans and encourage the industry to pursue these initiatives as we continue to build up Singapore as a worldclass education hub for local and international students," said Mr Kenneth Tan, Director, Services, Singapore Economic Development Board.
New Initiatives New Degrees to be Launched for July 2005 intake
LASALLE will launch a School of Film beginning with a BA (Hons) degree with postgraduate degree in the years to follow. New programmes for July 2005 intake include: o MA Art Therapy o MA Arts & Cultural Management o MA Curatorial Studies o MA Design by Project o MA Ceramics o MA Public Art o MA Directing (Theatre and Film) o BA (Hons) Film o BA (Hons) Contemporary Asian Theatre Studies o BA (Hons) Performance Design o BA (Hons) Music (with specialisations in Jazz, Western Classical Music, South-east Asian Music and Popular Music) Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore
Newly established by LASALLE-SIA, the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore is devoted to the exhibition and research of international and contemporary Asian art. It aims, through its dynamic programme of exhibitions at its exhibition facility, the Earl Lu Gallery, and through its extensive programme of publications, conferences and research activities, to contribute to the discourses surrounding contemporary art in Asia.
International Museum of Design Singapore
Apart from housing five world-class performance spaces equipped with the latest in theatre entertainment technology, the new campus will also be home to the International Museum of Design Singapore (iMODS), which aims to be one of the world’s leading museums of design, fashion and architecture. Said Professor Ely: “The world’s leading designers will participate in our talks and workshops as we nurture new design talent in exhibitions and commissions at the museum and in our international touring programme. The International Museum of Design Singapore will house a permanent collection of the Classic Design Icons of the World to inspire the next generation of Designers in Singapore.”
The iMODS website will offer information about exhibitions and other events at the museum, and will showcase the latest innovations in the dynamic field of multimedia at the Digital Design Museum. It will provide an invaluable research resource on all the designers, architects, materials and technologies featured at the museum. iMODS will link with the Design Museum in London, the UK’s largest museum provider of design education resources.
International Operations
Plans for three new offshore campuses have been successfully negotiated with international partners including a Perth Campus in 2005 and Sydney in 2006. Discussions are well advanced with two partners in the USA for joint provision from 2005; and, in Japan agreement has been reached for significant operations in Anime and student/staff transfer from 2007.
Among the partnerships are:
The world’s largest provider of Animation The Flanders Fashion Institute Digital Hollywood (Japan) The Royal College of Art, London Stephen F Austin University, Texas University of Notre Dame Australia Notre Dame University, Indiana.
