UTTERLY ART invites you to the opening of An (E)ye for Identity Prints by the graduating diploma class 2004 of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Chan Mei Hsien Tomoko Okuno Soo Kin Wei Yue Chwee Seng Saturday 17th July 2004 5 pm Utterly Art Exhibition Space 208 South Bridge Road 2nd Level Tel: 6226 2605
Mon-Sat 11.30 am - 8 pm Sun 12 noon - 5.30 pm The exhibition runs from Wednesday 14th July to Sunday 25th July 2004. Members of the graduating diploma class (major in printmaking) 2004 of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts may be different, diverse individuals, but they share certain commonalities in their current practices with their art. They enjoy using figures, and the underlying concerns in their use of figures reveal preoccupations with self and the human condition. The work is introspective, and we can observe the searching, questioning, the finding of one’s way at the start of one’s professional art career, and the discovery of self and identity. Who am I? Who are we? What am I as a human being? Who are we as a race, a people, a nation? Technique-wise, the printmakers enjoy experimenting with texturing and effects, particularly with collography where the inclusion of masking tape, shellac, tearing, penknife cuts and even bandages on the plate create the individuality of their expressions. With a common eye for identity, this quartet of printmakers nevertheless set out on their individual paths of creativity, style, ingenuity and inventiveness.
UTTERLY ART is nominated for the Spirit of Enterprise 2004 Awards! Visit the Spirt of Enterprise website at www.soe.org.sg , register and vote for Dr Pwee Keng Hock of Utterly Art if you think we deserve it! Voting ends at 2359hrs on the night of 31st July. Prizes will be donated to an educational institution of our choice!

Retrospective Features
Flight of the Bumble Bee Chio E-Xian, Matthew Joseph Nah, Noraini Bte Rahim, Nur Ain Bte Mohd Noor, Poh Kwee Choo, Teresa Tay Swee Ling, Zenn Tan Mui Cheng, Yvonne Tay Li Ping, Karin Wee Jia Ning Singapore When: 01 Jul 2004 (Thu), 9.00 AM - 30 Sep 2004 (Thu), 11.00 PM at the Plasma Screens, Esplanade
Associating busy human beings with the forever-busy bee is most appropriate. The visuals chosen are daily activities and objects seen in our everyday city-lives, like moving traffic, blinking florescent lights, climbing of stairs and even fountains. The video itself is a collection of juxtaposed visuals with their speed in today’s contemporary living.
Three Mornings in a Day Nicholas Chai, Jolene Lai, Genevieve Chua, Aiman Hakim Bin Mohd Amin, Muhammad Nazri Bin Mokhtar, Patrick Chan Chee Kuan, Md. Nor Herman Bin Salleh Singapore When: 01 Jul 2004 (Thu), 9.00 AM - 30 Sep 2004 (Thu), 11.00 PM at the Plasma Screens, Esplanade
An account which centres around three eccentric characters - a desolate girl, a procrastinator and a self-obsessed woman - on their daily morning routine, at exactly the same moment in time.
S'pore's Most Wanted Deborah McKellar, Sylvia Haliman, Kalidass, Ghana, Raphael Ng Singapore When: 01 Jul 2004 (Thu), 9.00 AM - 30 Sep 2004 (Thu), 11.00 PM at the Plasma Screens, Esplanade
The creation of nuisance and offence is born out of the predictability of normalcy and behavioural fallacy. This video has three chapters broken into the following: Kitchen Parade; Sleep Walk; Blank Out.

Mock Ducks and Manicured Poodles Vincent Leow Singapore When: 27 Aug 2004 (Fri), 11.00 AM - 27 Sep 2004 (Mon), 8.30 PM at the Jendela (Visual Arts Space), Esplanade
Vincent Leow’s seventh solo exhibition zooms into the subject of urban culture as it crosses the boundaries blurring fictional and reality. These paintings on canvas are the result of exploration into the themes of urban myths, hype, reality shows, banality and absurdity that complete our daily diet of information and entertainment. Fusing representation and metaphorical icons, images and urban myths that we absorb from the media and which distort our sense of reality, Leow produces large, colourful paintings to reflect and comment upon existing contemporary culture whereby truth and myths are merged and fused.
Leow is the Founder of Plastique Kinetic Worms, an art space managed by artists, and a Senior Lecturer at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts.
SingArt - A Brush with Lions
When: 20 May 2004 (Thu), 6.00 AM - 30 Sep 2004 (Thu), 12.00 AM at the Mall Level 2, Upper and Lower Concourse, Waterfront, Esplanade
SingArt - A Brush with Lions features a series of unique lions displayed at public areas all throughout Singapore. The SingArtists are prominent personalities from the arts, entertainment, sports, business, medicine and public service. SingArtists were free to design, paint, decorate, and accessorise their lion to express their own artistic vision, their personality, to make a statement or simply amuse.
18 were initially set-free in Feb 2004. More has since been released at Paragon before finding their own lairs around the city. Look out for the 7 SingArt Lions at Esplanade!
SingArt - A Brush with Lions is presented by Caltex and Raffles Hotel with support from the Singapore Tourism Board. To learn more about the exhibition and how you can adopt a lion for charity, please visit www.singart.com.sg
Sail-away Gradimir Aleksic Belgrade/Singapore When: 27 Aug 2004 (Fri), 7.00 PM - 20 Sep 2004 (Mon), 2.00 AM at the Forecourt, Esplanade
In times of turbulence, to set a sail means ‘to dare to make the move’, even if uncertainty is ahead. When the world becomes smaller, danger is the way out, with freedom as a calculated risk. This installation consists of large handmade masts, booms and sails with video projections on them. The projections reflect the continuous appearing and disappearing of human shade(s) in motion while a soundscape indicates isolation through eerie processed signals. Created in the traditional fashion of a Latin sail, commonly used in the Mediterranean, the sails interact with the outdoor elements to reflect physical change.
Cubex - Explorations in Urban Overgrowth Delta (Boris Tellegen) Holland When: 07 Jul 2004 (Wed), 10.00 AM - 10 Aug 2004 (Tue), 11.00 PM at the Concourse, Esplanade
This exclusive commission by Esplanade (in collaboration with Readymade Projects Pte. Ltd. and represented by artist Delta) is the first exhibition of its kind to showcase graffiti as a major artwork in prime city locations. Cubex is a continuing project that explores themes prevalent in our immediate urban (city) landscape – the deconstruction of existing infrastructures and the reconstruction of these systems - in Delta’s distinct style. Curated by Putri Trisulo, Readymade Projects Pte Ltd, Singapore
p-10 presents an exhibition of the p-10 residency programme:
Please Take This Seriously By Bernice Lau
Opening reception: 15 July (Thu), 7pm Exhibition period: 15-31 July (by appointment only)
“Approaching this art project with a necroscopic intention, I intend to create a black and white environment. Contrasting everyday situations and images drawn from memories of the past with the display of cranes and umbrellas, the artist intend to form a mise en scene and reflect upon contemporary Singapore living.”
Bernice Lau is a painter and illustrator, who is clearly grappling with a bundle of personal revelations. Currently in the Lasalle-RMIT Bachelor of Fine Arts programme, she prefers to shy away from rational constraints and dabbles instead in whimsical and amusing hypotheses. She recently curated and organised Manipulations at SG Private Banking Gallery and is p-10’s Artist-in-Residence for June 2004.
With guest artist Hafiz Osman.
