STUDIO 19 Studio 19 is an artist residence and art studio where artists produce art, brainstorm and discuss about art related matters. Currently, 3 artists, Zulkifle Mahmod, Urich Lau, and Kai Lam, are using this space to live and work. To us, it is a challenge to our artistic practice to be able to transform this multi-purpose space into an environment where art becomes a total experience. The total experience allows us to share ideas and to develop and produce collaborative works. We hope to establish Studio 19 as a viable art space where activities such as workshops, discussions and exhibitions are frequent. Pleae contact us if you have any art projects or activities that you like to involve our space.
For the next presentation of Studio 19, we are organizing a video screening of local and overseas artists' works. If you have any works that you will like to show please let us know.
After a year of establishing Studio 19, we have decided to present an inaugural open studio exhibition to showcase works that have been produced recently and in the past. Most works will be in 2-dimensional form, which we have done during the time when we were making other artworks individually. There will also be a collaborative sound performance on the open studio day itself as a prelude to an on-going sound project that we are working on. So come, spend a merry making weekend with us and enjoy our artistic productions.

“Beyond Identity” A Solo Exhibition by Belgium Artist Natacha Arena 31 March – 5 April 2004 SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Francaise de Singapour Organised by Alliance Francaise de Singapour & The Royal Embassy of Belgium
Confronting the extremities between expressiveness of the human body and reflection of the self in this upcoming exhibition in SG Private Banking Gallery at Alliance Francaise de Singapour, is Belgium artist Natacha Arena. In conjunction with French-Speaking Countries’ Festival, Beyond Identity is a debut solo effort by Arena, who graduated from Institut Saint-Luc and the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
Interestingly, Arena has experiences in theatre and film productions, specialising in make-up and special effects. Instead of the exaggerated facial emotions, her portraits display stagnant expressions – a blatant honesty of her paintings. Images of emotionless faces juxtaposing heavily gestured-bodies, disperse the notion of beauty. It is an analogy to the absent self-reflection and the intimacy of expression, which prompt us to observe and question the coherent relationship of the two. She also uses warm colours to depict vibrancy of the human body, and sensuality of the facial features.
This series draws in an awkward intimacy and urges its audience to introspect and ponder what is beyond identity.
About the Artist
Born in Belgium 28 December 1973
Natacha Arena grew up in Brussels, Belgium, with her parents who originated from Italy.
After her studies in Fine Arts at the Institut Saint-Luc and the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Arena took up and graduated from Make-Up Art and Special Effects. She has worked for the Royal Opera “La Monnaie” in Brussels, as well as numerous theatre and film productions.
Upon her arrival in Singapore in 2002, the need for her to do what is truly her calling – to paint and draw – found its expression. Her work explores expressively on the human body.
