UTTERLY ART presents VIETNAMESE FIGURATION a group painting exhibition by contemporary Vietnamese Masters DANG XUAN HOA . NGUYEN THANH BINH . NGUYEN TRUNG . NGUYEN QUAN . VAN NGOC. HOANG HONG CAM . HOANG PHUONG VY. NGUYEN VAN CUONG 29th November 2002 to 15th December 2002 Utterly Art Exhibition Space 208 South Bridge Road 2nd Level, Singapore 058757 Tel: 6226 2605 E-mail: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg Mon-Sat 11.30 am - 8 pm Sun 12 noon - 5.30 pm With the advent of ‘Doi Moi’ (literally ‘change and newness’) in Vietnamese society since 1986, Vietnamese art has flourished tremendously, converting itself from a medium of propaganda and means of expression for struggling artists, to an art which ranks as one of Southeast Asia’s most desirable and collectable. At its heart has been the unique Vietnamese sense of aesthetics, an Eastern pursuit of often-minimalist beauty and serenity on the one hand, to colourful, simplistic outpourings of peasant gaiety on the other. While the French colonials left an indelible legacy of painterly academicism, the free use of raw, naïve lines deriving from rambunctious folk aesthetics puts an unmistakable stamp of charm upon much of Vietnamese art, which also finds sympathetic resonances in Cubism and Fauvism. Vietnamese Figuration examines the visage of the modern contemporary Vietnamese in painting, and is a look at how Vietnamese masters of the 1990s see themselves and their fellow countrymen. The exhibition is divided into four sections: Elegance and Refinement: The Vietnamese Lady; Portraiture: A Focus on the Face; Village Inspirations and finally, Situational Representations.
The artists represent a cross-section of some of the most collectable and sought after artists in Vietnam. Most of the painters have been collected by either the Fine Arts Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, or the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi, or both. Dang Xuan Hoa, Nguyen Trung, Nguyen Quan and Van Ngoc are in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum. All are carried by important galleries in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Dang Xuan Hoa is one of the original Hanoi ‘Gang of Five’ who have exhibited both locally and internationally together. Landscapes from the painter Hong Viet Dung, another popular and sought-after member of the ‘Gang of Five’, are also available in the gallery. Paintings of ladies by the senior painter Nguyen Trung have been featured regularly at auctions at Sotheby’s in Singapore.

THE STORY OF THE ROOF OF THE ESPLANADE
Britain's Michael Wilford, Singapore's DP Architects and London-based engineers Atelier One designed the massive roof shells that encase the Esplanade atria. Their first concept was two smooth glass domes as the roofs. The team who hatched the idea were sitting in chilly, overcast London and did not fully appreciate the cost of air-conditioning two gigantic greenhouses in sultry Singapore. The problem was resolved by cladding the domes in 5,000 triangular panels made from an exotic futuristic material called Butacite. These panels blocked out the sunlight and render the Esplanade its characteristic spiky profile.
BUREAUCRATIC PARADOX
Singapore's well-behaved citizenry have built a gleaming first-world city through efficiency and hard work — not thinking out of the box. But local authorities want to turn it into a high-tech hub, which means information and ideas need to circulate freely. The city is caught in a "bureaucratic paradox" - how to change Singapore to a culturally vibrant society while retaining its traditional safe and predictable shape.
Artist Feature Amanda Heng

Narrating Bodies is an ongoing project that Amanda Heng has been working with her mother since 1996. The idea is to reconnect with her mother in order to find out about herself.
