Europe – Beauty in Every Corner
Part 1 - Greece: Tranquility”
A Photography Exhibition

SG Private Banking Gallery
Alliance Française de Singapour
25th June - 4th July 2005
(Opening on the 24th June, Friday 2005)

The “Europe: Beauty in every corner” project aims to document a specific facet of each of the European state members. Rather than focusing on the most obvious and common monuments and aspects of the European states, the project records the more subtle aspects of European life and environment.

This exhibition showcases the project’s first unit, namely: “Greece: Tranquility”. Visitors to Greece have often described their fascination of the Greek “natural” and “ancient” landscape. The dazzling blue skies, the ancient temples, people’s deeply rooted religious faith, and the slow pace of life, all make their mark on every visitor.

In this unit, Marios decomposes these elements into simple black and white pictorials that capture each visual element of Greece for the viewer to examine. No attempt is made to capture it as an ordinary colourful image or as part of the Greek daily life. Instead every attempt is directed at provoking the viewer to question what it would be like if they were there, how they would have experienced the land’s tranquility, and what it would be like had they been immersed in the environment in real-life.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marios Pittas was born in 1966 on the island of Cyprus. At the age of twenty-one, Marios moved to London, England, where he obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of London. In 1993, Marios moved to Singapore where he is a permanent resident. He lives with his wife, Ching Siew, their three children, Zoe, Louiza and Theodore, two budgies and an unknown number of fish.

Marios has been taking photographs since the age of 8. Through the years, he has photographed a large variety of subjects ranging from classic pictorials to experimentations with photo composites, pinhole photography and others.

Having lived for more than 15 years in “far away” lands, and frequently conducting small-scale ethnographic studies, it is no surprise that Marios’ current photo-interests are people, their environment and their interactions with the environment.

Marios first presented some of his photo work in a group exhibition at the Singapore History Museum as part of the Museum’s celebration for “International Friendship Day”, 3-17th April 2004 (titled: “Faces of the world”). The exhibition included 9 selections from the series: “Europe: Beauty in every corner” (taken from “Unit 1 - Greece: Tranquility”, and “Unit 2 - Cyprus: Passing Time”).

The series aims to document a specific facet of each of the European state members. Rather than focusing on the most obvious and common monuments and aspects of the European states, the project records the more subtle aspects of European life and environment.

Marios’ current and past photo work can be viewed in his web site: www.photo-orama.com
