CREATIVE-ASIA DESIGN SYMPOSIUM 2003

Calling all designers and design enthusiasts! Learn about the changing global design-scape from industry experts in this two-day symposium organised by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and to be held at the Singapore Art Museum on 10 and 11 October.

The role of the designer in today’s creative world has never been more significant or critical than it is now. This is especially so in the fast-growing Asian countries, where increasing globalisation has resulted in vast opportunities and potential to explore design concepts. However, designers should take heed to “think global, but act local” by constantly reacting and responding to the needs of the society and the surrounding environmental changes.

An annual affair, the Creative-Asia Design Symposium this year looks at the concept of “Place” in design, that is, customising designs to suit the unique characteristics of a specific audience in a certain locale.

Six multi-talented and award-winning design practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region will share their views, concerns and expectations in this Symposium:

1. Mr Tay Guan Hin (Creative Director, Leo Burnett Singapore)
2. Ms Rutaiwan Wongsirasawad (Creative Director, J. Walter Thompson Thailand)
3. Mr Jimmy Lam (Regional Creative Advisor, Dentsu Asia Pte Ltd, Hong Kong)
4. Mr Ta-Lih Shieh (Chairperson, Assoc Prof, Shih-Chien University, Taiwan)
5. Mr Norman Tan (SEA Creative Director, J. Walter Thompson Singapore)
6. Mr Peter Soh (Chief Creative Officer, Saatchi & Saatchi, Shanghai)

Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of the Design Singapore Council and Deputy Chairman of the National Arts Council, will be the Guest-of-Honour for Symposium’s opening ceremony on 11 October 2003, 1.30pm at the Glass Hall, Singapore Art Museum. Both sessions of the Symposium will be chaired by Mr Paul Tan, Chief Consultant, Chariots Consulting Services.

An exhibition to complement the Symposium will subsequently be held at the NAFA Selegie Gallery and NAFA Creative Centre from 13 – 20 October.
