Double Happiness - A Fantasy in RED

JUSTIN LEE's first solo painting exhibition
Thursday 23rd January 2003 7.30 pm Utterly Art Exhibition Space
208 South Bridge Road 2nd Level, Singapore 058757
Tel: 6226 2605 E-mail: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg
Mon-Sat 11.30 am - 8 pm Sun 12 noon - 5.30 pm
The exhibition runs through to Sunday 9th February 2003.

The heady fizz of Justin Lee’s brand of East-West pop art belies a thoughtful inquiry into the pervasive interweaving of Western influences into the fabric of Singapore society today. Helmed by a British-, and later American-trained leadership, we have been steered relentlessly towards modernization and globalization with an unabashedly Western veneer. Justin’s exhibition however is not so much criticism but critique of our condition; he tells not what it should be, but as it is. To him, East and West meet in a happy if mixed marriage of circumstance, typified by the auspicious character for Double Happiness used liberally at Chinese weddings. This marriage of cultures, set in a consumerist climate of mass production driven by an unabated desire for Western goods, has spawned a dazzling array of visual enticements which the artist has merrily incorporated into his paintings.

Oh, and just to let you know, we DON'T CHARGE GST!!! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR to one and all!!!
STOP PRESS: 20 Jan - Justin's Singapore Flag painting has been banned by the Licensing Officer for Arts Entertainment, Media Development Authority!! You can't see it on the walls, we'll put the rejection letter there instead - sorry!
