More & Less : Art Show to Raise Funds for NAFA's New Campus Sculpture Square, 11 - 18 Jan 2003
Celebrations Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts will be entering into its 65th year of history in 2003. A brand new campus for the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and two new annexes for the Schools of Performing Arts and Fashion Studies will be taking shape and completed along Bencoolen Street in 2004.
The Salmon Theme In commemorating this significant event, SVA's Fine Art Department has initiated a fundraising art show, entitled "More & Less," to be staged at Sculpture Square from 11-18 Jan 2003.
The art show employs the "salmon" as a thematic symbol of resilience and strength, two major qualities that encapsulate the history of NAFA up till now, as well as its wide-spreading Alumni in the region.
The idea of creating salmons in clay and 150 individually hand-moulded salmons took effect in Sept 2002. The Ceramics unit in the Department undertook the task, assisted by many of our Fine Art lecturers. The 33-cm pottery salmons were created as a basic form for artists to lend their creative touches. Letters were sent to established artists, associates in the art world, and alumni; inviting them to breathe life into this three-dimensional salmon form.
Artists' Field Day Many artists responded enthusiastically to this invitation. On 4 Nov 2002, artists gathered at the NAFA Middle Campus courtyard to have a field day in art making. At the end of the day, over 120 salmon artworks were created. Although this was the first time many artists encountered using ceramic medium for creation, all of them had found ingenious and very individualistic ways to express their inventive flairs. Their concerted efforts in supporting their alma mater has always been NAFA's trademark. This event gave yet another opportunity for them to express their undying allegiance to NAFA.
What to Expect at the Show The "More & Less" art show will be unveiled on 11 Jan 2003 and continues till 18 Jan at Sculpture Square, 155 Middle Road. In the open courtyard, the salmon artworks created on the field day will be assembled into a school of salmons, as if swimming towards the new NAFA Campus, which is just next door. To create further visual impact, a group of students will build an enormous sculpture on site, a 6.2m-long salmon using thousands of NewaterTM bottles. This brings in a New lease of life into the history of NAFA as a full-fledged arts Institution moving into a brand new building!
Fine Art students' involvement in this charitable event will be further evident in a conjunction exhibition of about two hundred of their artworks of prints, paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures, also for sale to raise funds for the same purpose, during the same period at the NAFA Middle Gallery.
