NAFA visual arts degree graduates serve up sizzling works in "FEVER"!

Billed as the "antidote" to boring, run-of-the-mill exhibitions, FEVER, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) School of Visual Arts Degree Show 2005 promises to excite exhibition-goers with a sensational display of contemporary art and design works.

To be held from 1 – 5 June 2005, FEVER will feature cutting-edge creations by 34 graduates from six franchised degree programmes. They tackle a wide range of topics, ranging from identity to religion, sexuality to consumerism, social problems to urbanism and education. The works on display are of diverse forms and media, including graphic illustration, visual communication, interior design, exhibition design, models, animation, interactive media, experimental video, drawing, painting, sculpture, text-based art, installation and even performance art. This showcase reaffirms NAFA as the regional centre for higher learning in the visual arts.

Sabrina Koh Li-lin was the winner of "Best of Show" 2004, given out to the student who performed best at the Intermediate Level. From the pioneer cohort of the BA (Hons) Fine Art with Contemporary Writing, Sabrina has already carved out a multidisciplinary professional practice comprising text-based art, performance art, installation, writing, photography and design. Her artistic concern is the relation between body and sexuality, with an aim to explore a realm beyond conventional categories of gender. Sabrina is the founder of artee.concept.studio specialising in arts appreciation, and her degree education is supported by a generous grant from the Lee Foundation.

Tan Huey Wen was the recipient of the NAFA Scholarship 2004. During her study of BA (Hons) Graphic Communication, Huey Wen has explored different design possibilities such as conceptualisation, typography, advertising and graphic design. She believes art is an essential element for a society, because there are no societies without culture, and culture cannot exist without design. It is a problem-solving process which utilises beauty, contrast and harmony as its source. With her effort in design, she hopes to contribute to society and to beautify the world.

BA (Hons) Interior Design graduate, Alan Ong Kian Loon is an individual who outshines not only in the academic realm but also through his leadership qualities in co-curricular activities. As the Student Representative for this Degree Show, Alan has been a responsible mentor for his peers in the planning of the Show. His role as the Class Representative did not hinder him to perform well in his studies, and his consistent efforts have earned him the award of "Best Student at Intermediate Level".

Graduating with a BA (Hons) Multimedia Design is Justine Teng Hui Ling, who earlier received her Diploma in Multimedia (with Distinction) from NAFA in 2004. She has taken a special interest in film and video research and co-published the comic book Destiny and won various awards including Platinum Award in Animania 2004. She is also a scholarship recipient for her degree studies. Her graduating work is an exploration of identity formation among teenagers.
