Brian Parkes, the curator of Dinosaur Designs which opens to the public this Saturday, will be giving a talk on 28 May, Sat, 2.30pm at the Play Den, The Arts House. He will talk about the designs in the Dinosaur Designs exhibition and also extrapolate on Australian Design in general and the “new Australian design wave”. His bio as follows:

Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design
Brian Parkes has been Associate Director at Object since January 2000. Responsible for curating and managing Object’s artistic programs, his major curatorial projects for Object include Interiors (2001), Akira Isogawa (2002), Dinosaur Designs (2003), Sydney Style (2004), Design Island (2004) and Global Local (2005). He has played a key role in the development of Object Magazine and was Editor for Issue 42 (June 2003) and Issue 45 (December 2004).
A graduate of the Tasmanian School of Art in Hobart, Brian has a background in both the creative and commercial areas of museums and galleries. In addition to several freelance exhibition and publishing projects he managed the merchandising and retail operations at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (1998-2000) and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (1995-98). At both institutions Brian was regularly involved in major exhibition project teams, in the development of publications, and strategic planning. Prior to this he managed the exhibition program at the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart (1991-95).
Dinosaur Designs was formed in 1985 by Louise Olsen, Stephen Ormandy and Liane Rossler and has forged an important place within Australian design history as one of the country’s most exciting, innovative and creatively intuitive design teams.
Producing a diverse body of work including contemporary jewellery, homewares and individual objects, Dinosaur Designs straddles the intersection between art, craft, design and fashion. Their work takes inspiration from both art and nature and has a distinctively Australian character. Much of their work reflects the colours and forms of the Australian landscape, simple organic forms, polished river stones, monumental rock formations and coral clusters.
Other works reflect their interest in contemporary art, taking inspiration from British sculptor Henry Moore, the abstract ‘colour fields’ paintings of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock’s mid-twentieth century action painting. This current exhibition has been curated by Brian Parkes, Associate Director, Object – Australian Centre for Craft and Design and features Dinosaur Designs’ recent contemporary jewellery and homewares.
Showcasing Dinosaur Designs’ commitment to experimental and diverse creative practices, the exhibition presents more than twenty separate works exhibited in custom designed modular display units. Works in the exhibition include glass vases, ceramic tableware, silver jewellery and many varied objects cast in resin.
