STONY MEMORIES: BREAKING DOWN BOUNDARY WALL



Location: Sculpture Square Backyard.

Date:10th to 17th October 2003

On 10th to 17th October 2003, the boundary wall which divides Sculpture Square with the proposed new campus of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts will be demolished. Sculpture Square a non-profit organisation, which strives to bring the world of 3-dimensional art to the community and bridge the gap between the public and artists, recognises this tragic loss and plans to salvage the situation by inviting artists and the public to involve themselves in taking with them pieces of this broken but precious wall. This is the first time in Singapore where the demolition of a historical building is documented on tape and involves the participation of artists and public. Sculpture Square will have artists take away the broken pieces of the boundary wall, which they can incorporate in their own artwork. The public can purchase pieces of the wall and have in their homes a piece of monument, approximately 133 years old. Hence at the same time, not all is lost.

Sculpture Square, a registered charity which keenly champions the artistic development of 3-Dimensional art for local and regional artistic exchange, is interested in the conservation of historical sites. It’s own site which consists of a Gothic like cathedral and an old boarding house over a century old, was marked as a site on the 22 January 2000 and according to the URA, ‘…is an area designated for conservation.’ In this tradition Sculpture Square is steadfast in saving what it can of this old wall.

Therefore come to Sculpture Square on October 2003 and get your hands on something priceless. From October2003 the shattering of the boundary wall will begin and it’s pieces will later be lovingly gathered by Sculpture Square staff in a massive pile, where it can be collected by artists to incorporate in their works. As time passes all the fragments will eventually be in the hands of creative individuals to be recreated into new and unique ways. Hence it’s loss will not be in vain.

Sculpture Square’s decision to document and conserve the boundary wall is in keeping with its philosophy of treasuring Singapore’s history, culture and national monuments. It’s always a changing landscape in Singapore, and images captured on the glossy pages of book are never enough.
