NAFA students show how “one dot” can lead to many possibilities

In the beginning was the dot
The dot is the origin of all creations. A grain serves as a nucleus in the oyster to start off the production process of a pearl. Many dots give a line, and many lines create a plane.
In these contexts and many others, the dot is the basis for limitless possibilities, approaches, directions, outcomes and impacts.

Themed One Dot, Many Possibilities, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) School of Visual Arts Graduation Show this year celebrates the common origin of the graduates’ creativity and the diverse paths that they will embark on with their visual arts training.

Biggest visual arts showcase in Singapore
With more than 1,000 illuminating visual artworks by 242 graduates from four diploma programmes – Fine Art, Interior Design, Multimedia, and Visual Communication on display, this is the biggest showcase of visual arts in Singapore. The pioneer cohort of Exhibition Design and Furniture Design majors from the Diploma in Interior Design programme will also present their exhibition designs and furniture prototypes.

Graduates to look out for
Many of this year’s graduates have received critical acclaim and top awards in national and international competitions including, the Della Butcher Award 2004; “Launch Your Career in Exhibition Design” Competition 2004; Bombay Sapphire Martini Glass Design Competition 2004; and the Loewe SOLO “Harmony of the Extreme” Art Competition 2004, etc.

A number of them chose to switch careers to pursue their love for art. Tan Sen Suan, who has a PhD in Ecology, will be graduating with a Diploma in Fine Art, while
Economics graduate Faith Tan is on the road to becoming a full-fledged Interior Designer. (Please see Appendix for details).

Best Display Awards to be given at Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of One Dot, Many Possibilities will be held at NAFA’s Gallery 3 on 13 May 2005 at 5.30pm. Four “Best Display Award” trophies will be given out to graduates who have presented their works creatively. Associate Professor (Dr) Milton Tan, Director Ex Officio of the DesignSingapore Council, will grace the exhibition opening as the Guest-of-Honour.
