Members of the graduating diploma class (major in printmaking) 2004 of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts may be different, diverse individuals, but they share certain commonalities in their current practices with their art. They enjoy using figures, and the underlying concerns in their use of figures reveal preoccupations with self and the human condition. The work is introspective, and we can observe the searching, questioning, the finding of one’s way at the start of one’s professional art career, and the discovery of self and identity. Who am I? Who are we? What am I as a human being? Who are we as a race, a people, a nation? Technique-wise, the printmakers enjoy experimenting with texturing and effects, particularly with collography where the inclusion of masking tape, shellac, tearing, penknife cuts and even bandages on the plate create the individuality of their expressions. With a common eye for identity, this quartet of printmakers nevertheless set out on their individual paths of creativity, style, ingenuity and inventiveness.

UTTERLY ART is nominated for the Spirit of Enterprise 2004 Awards! Visit the Spirt of Enterprise website at
