Fantasmatic: 9 Chilean Artists
Nury Gonz?lez, Patrick Hamilton, Cristobal Lehyt, Iv?n Navarro, Francisco Ram?rez, Cristi?n Silva-Avaria, Francisco Valdés, Alicia Villarreal, Andrés Vio

Curated by Luz Maria Williamson
Chile

'For the Western world, Latin America remains as a reserve of difference and exotica and at the same time, phantasmatic' - Alberto Hidalgo (1897-1967) Peruvian poet

Chilean curator Luz Maria Williamson presents a selection of works from 9 notable contemporary Chilean artists. Their works capture and engage the kinds of issues - intellectual, aesthetic and political - that have marked and defined contemporary Chilean art for the last decade.

These artists strive to push the 'language of art' further through individual expressions using diverse media, material and process. Video, photography, painting, found materials & performances are part of their resource.

Still, certain shared interests and accents emerge - such as the exploration of the ironical, the fantastic - or phantasmatic. Many return to or employ the idea of the 'non-sense' of art or the irreverent and fictitious in the art-making and art-consuming experience.
