Encountering a creation by Filipino sculptor Michael Cacnio is to be drawn into a miniature diorama of Philippine life. Irresistibly engaging, his sculptures evoke emotions of love and nostalgia drawn from Michael’s childhood memories. There are children atplay, the bonding between mother or father and child, itinerant vendors, and ac elebration of the rich bounty that nature has to offer in the Philippines.
Each figurine is a tiny marvel, wrought from brass using the oxyacetylene blowtorch. The finished products are miracles of poise and interactivity betweenthe figures and their supporting backdrops. In the adventures of his intrepid alter-ego, the boy child, Michael’s flair for the theatrical is self-evident. We cannot help but imagine the twinkle in the sculptor’s eye as he recreates, with Disney-esque magic, his life in brass.
