Hypersurface is a collaborative multimedia installation by Vince Ong Choon Hoe and Brian Gothong Tan.

This exhibition is based on post-structuralist writings and it is also a reflection of the artists’ personal experience growing up in Singapore. Due to rapid urban renewal, the artists feel a sense of alienation as places of familiarity are demolished or renovated beyond recognition. To create the whole idea of the world as transient and vaporous, the installation is a conglomeration of four components namely the architectural structures, the multimedia, the atmospheric effect and the sonic landscape.

The first component of Hypersurface is made in the Deconstructivised architectural style of Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind serving as a metaphor for the current state of our world. Issues of fragmentation, decentralisation and pluralism are explored through the placement of these structures and how the space is divided. The multimedia in the exhibition consists of clips of film footage shot in both fictional and documentary-style in different cities like New York, Singapore and London. In the sonic landscape, sound is used to heighten the audience’s experience of the exhibition as traffic noises, wind chimes and heartbeats will be projected to enhance the emotional engagement and reinforce the illusion of being in another world in another time.

Vince is currently pursuing a degree in architecture at the Architectural Association in London. He is interested in hybrid architecture and the creation of immersive environments. Brian is a visual artist and a student at the California Institute of the Arts in the United States. He has been involved in numerous multi-disciplinary projects with the Necessary Stage and Action Theatre, and is a recipient of the Shell-NAC scholarship in 2003.
