Singapore & China opens at new art space instinc

‘Ring around the rosy, pocketful of posies…'
a multi-disciplinary exhibition by Singapore & China artists will open at the new art space instinc, located at 271C New Bridge Road, from 9 AUG 2005 to 26 AUG 2005.

This exhibition expresses the thoughts and emotions of young visual artists, investigating popular culture and its influence on youth and young adults as well as the response of youth to media bombardment.

The eight artists participation in this project come from a variety of backgrounds sharing one thing in common - the location context of Singapore. This exhibition presents the exploration of the term ‘culture’, as well as the various ways in which media and culture intertwines.

Presented through paintings, silk-screen on canvases, relief prints, comic books from wood-cut prints, T-shirts, sculpture, installation and performance, eight artists - Aidah Dolrahim, Cheng Guang Feng, Dan Lim, Jeremy Hiah, Lina Adam, Marienne Yang, Warren Khong and Yeo Shih Yun - will express their thoughts on popular culture in Singapore.

About instinc

instinc is located at the attic of a conservation townhouse that has been carefully restored, originally built in the 1800s. Creating an inspirational environment to work in, instinc has a pointed roof with high ceiling and a large patio natural lighting, adding to the character of the space.

Started in November 2004, instinc is an artist-run space that aims to foster friendships and collaborations with other artists. instinc is a dynamic space in continuous process of creation and is committed in exhibiting all forms of contemporary art.

The objectives of instinct are:
? To provide an exhibition space managed by an artist in order to establish a vibrant environment for creative practice and dialogue.
? To provide a space to exchange ideas and interaction for artists in the community.

About the artists

Biography of Artist, Aidah Dolrahim(Singapore)Aldah recently graduated from Open University, conducted at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts with a BFA in May 2005. Recipient of the Georgette Chen Art Scholarship in 2002 and The Della Butcher Art Award (Certificate of Merit) in 2004. A full time artist, Aldah's works have been exhibited in 'Dream Catcher', photo slideshow at Esplanade, Singapore , Red + White = Pink, Utterly Art, Singapore and Passionova Photography exhibition, Centro, One Fullerton, Singapore.
Biography of artist, Cheng Guang Feng(China) Cheng Guang Feng was born in 1983 in Shenyang, China. He graduated in 2001 from Shenyang Art Academy majoring in drawing and is currently residing in Singapore and pursuing his art education with a scholarship from Nayang Academy of Fine Arts (ceramics). Guang Feng participated in numerous exhibitions in Beijing and Singapore; Insomnia 48hrs at The Arts House in 2004 and his recent Solo Exhibition at Your Mother Gallery titled, 'Discovery' in 2005 to name a few.
Biography of artist, Dan Lim(Singapore)Dan is currently pursuing his Diploma in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from Lasalle SIA. His works has been exhibited in NAFA South East Asia Fine Arts Exhibition, Sculpture Square in 2004.

Biography of Artist, Jeremy Hiah(Singapore) Jeremy graduated with Bachelor of Arts Fine Arts. Royal Melbourne Institute and Technology University, Melbourne, Australia in 2001. Jeremy is the director of Your Mother Gallery which started in Jan 2005. He is also a member of The Artists Village, Singapore since 1996 and was previously elected Vice President for the year 2001. A member of The Sculpture Society, Singapore since 2001, currently holding the Vice President position, he is very active in the art scene and has participated in many exhibitions both local and overseas like San Francesco, Como, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia and Thailand. Jeremy held his solo show 'RAW/WAR' at Your Mother Gallery in 2005 with the support of NAC and a group show ' Snratch' in Beijing.

Biography of Lina Adam (Singapore) Established project ‘a fraction of mad lynette’, a series of ongoing art projects, website, a mail art project featuring young Singapore artists, an online magazine featuring young Singapore artists and others, still in progress of conceptualization and work in collaboration with alternative art gallery ‘Your Mother Gallery’ and its director Jeremy Hiah, since 2004/2005.

Biography of artist, Marienne Yang Xiao-Juan (Singapore) Marienne recently graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts (High Distinction) from University of Tasmania, majoring in Electronic Media in 2004. She has exhibited widely in Australia and Singapore. She is a member of The Artist Village since 2005.

Biography of Artist, Warren Khong (Singapore) A young artist currently in the midst of his studies, he venerates God, Art and various levels of intoxication and is passionate about all three. A lover of both the avant-garde and kitsch, it is easy to see why he is sometimes caught in a conundrum. Nonetheless he endeavors to put both into his art. Warren is also a member of The Artist Village since 2005.

Biography of Artist, Yeo Shih Yun (Singapore) Shih Yun's fascination for the abstract medium surfaced during her time at Lasalle, when she first experimented with the fusion of fine arts and contemporary design. One of her early experimental works received acclaim as a highly commended entry for the UOB Painting of the Year competition in 1999, which spurred her to further explore fine arts and the abstract form. After graduating from Lasalle, Shih Yun attended the one-year Post Baccalaureate Program (Painting) at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Shih Yun has collaborated with artists from America and UK for the past four years and has held numerous exhibitions in Singapore and Australia. Some of her recent exhibitions include “exit” in Melbourne, Australia and “NewFinds 2003" at MITA ARTrium. In addition, she was awarded the Emerging Artist Grant from the National Arts Council to hold her first solo exhibition titled, “log:one03” at Block 43 Studio Gallery in 2003.
