Artist Feature National Arts Council Press Release for the 2002 Young Artist Awards
Tay Bak Chiang graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. He then pursued further training in portraiture at the China Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, China.
Tay’s work has been recognized as a fresh and innovative fusion of traditional medium with new forms. Working essentially with the Chinese ink and colour, the evolution of his unique creative style is built upon his sound artistic foundation and his openness to new ideas. His direction towards developing contemporary aesthetics has been welcomed by the arts community and his talent is recognized through the many awards he has received. In 1994, Tay won the first prize at the Creation of Art Through Inspiration Competition organized by the Singapore Mint. This was followed by the 16th Shell Discovery Art Award in 1995. In 1999, Tay was presented the Distinction in the Chinese Painting category at Dr Tan Tze Chor Art Awards. In the same year his piece “Awaiting”, depicting a grandstand crowd at the races, won the first prize in the representational art category in the Singapore Turf Club art Competition. In 2000, his artwork “Emotions by the Quay” claimed the first prize in the Traditional Chinese Medium Category at the 19th UOB Painting of the Year Competition.
Since 1995, Tay’s work has been selected for showing at the Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal-carving Calligraphy and Painting Society Exhibitions. These exhibitions, since his first at the China Academy of Fine Arts (Swatow Branch) have been a source of encouragement and feedback for his work and continue to influence his growth as an artist. Aside from numerous group exhibitions in Singapore, Tay was also featured prominently in Nokia Singapore Art in 1999 and 2001. Tay is a member of the NAFA Alumni Association, the Singapore Art Society and the Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal Carving, Calligraphy and Painting Society.
