Chua Soo Kim
Born into a family that specialises in pottery, Chua Soo Kim had a great
interest in the art and mastered it at a very early age. He became a
professional potter in 1973 at the age of 15. After completing his secondary
education in 1974, he worked for his family's company where he was trained in
production and research.
In 1985, he joined Studio 106, a potters' club that was headed by eminent
sculptor-potter Ng Eng Teng. He was a part-time ceramics lecturer with the
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1990 to 1991, and subsequently a lecturer at
the National Institute of Education on a part-time basis from 1991 to 1998.
Soo Kim has participated in numerous solo and group ceramics exhibitions held at
the National Museum, Goethe Institute, Singapore Conference Hall, Singapore Art
Museum, Mandarin Hotel, UOB Plaza, Tanglin Mall and the President Charity Art
Exhibition organised by the National Arts Council at Tourism Court. Since 1995,
he has been invited to participate in the annual Aveiro International Ceramics
Competition in Portugal.
Soo Kim also continues to conduct pottery classes at his studio as well as in
schools. He is a member of the National University of Singapore Center for the
Arts Pottery Committee.
