A pilot exhibition involving four US-based Singaporean artists - Wee Hong Ling,
Geraldine Lau, Edwin Ho and Yang Tan - Imprint will showcase 12 Igloo sculptures
by Wee, 8 Vastness photographs by Tan, 7 Hairscape images by Ho and 6
Information Retrieval prints by Lau for 3 weeks in New York, USA in January
2005.
Wee, a ceramic artist, was working as a NASA research fellow when she discovered
her latent creative energy and passion for ceramics. She was awarded numerous
grants and scholarships over the years, which included the Ceramics Scholarship
from the 92nd Street Y Art Center in New York (2000 - 2003), the Special
Artists' Award from the Lee Foundation (2002, 2003) and the Lucy Morgan
Scholarship from the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina (2003).
Exhibitions and competitions in which she has participated include the Annual
Emerging Artists Exhibition in New York (2002), the New York-Tokyo Ceramics
Competition in New York (2003) and the "Life from Earth" Group Exhibition in
Singapore (2003). She was a previous recipient of a Singapore Internationale
grant for her exhibition, Crossing Boundaries, held in New York in early 2004.
Lau works primarily in drawing and painting, and her works have been featured in
the International Print Center New York exhibitions (2003), as well as other
exhibitions in the US and Singapore. Her past awards include the World Views
2001 Summer Artists residency, the Puffin Foundation Grant (2002), the Philip
Morris Merit Award (1996) and the Yokogawa Full Scholarship Award for B.A. in
Fine Arts.
A former art director and stylist for magazines such as Vogue Singapore, Female
and Citta Bella, Ho now focuses on still life photography. The holder of a
Certificate in Photography from Santa Monica College, Ho has contributed covers
and numerous fashion spreads to various magazines.
Tan is an urban landscape photographer with many awards to his name. His work
was selected for the Six New Talents in Photography in New York City in 2003,
and Tan has also been invited to a group exhibition, ARGOS 2000, in Switzerland.
His work has been commissioned by international commercial clients such as
Hewlett Packard, Timberland, Malaysia Airlines and Oleg Cassini, as well as
editorial clients including Surface, Details and Newsweek.
The four artists expect about 400 visitors, including Singaporeans, Friends of
Singapore members and foreign diplomats in the New York metropolitan area.
