Shopping centres and malls, pop and advertising images are some of the common
features that characterize the consumer society today. An integral part of this
culture of buying and selling are the images designed to entice and induce
desire and consumption. Tayís work explores the question of whether womenís
bodies have become a currency of exchange or form of commodity. While society
has advanced the role of the woman and her contributions across all fronts of
social and economic activities, do these sustained projections trivialize or
even demean the identity of women?
Reconstruction of a City
Title of work: Global-nation
Year: 2004
Medium: Recycled clothes, wood
Dimensions: Variable
A colourful patchwork tent made of used clothes reflects on issues of
consumption, wastage, poverty, recycling and conservation. The work examines how
under the game of globalization, the act of disposal has become a modern urban
lifestyle while the re-consumption of used products remains a way of life for
the poor.
