In the schema of painter Wong Shih Yaw’s latest exhibition, clothes not only
make the man, in some instances, they take on a life of their own. There is
inordinate attention paid to detail in the crumpling of cloth, the texturing of
material, and the dramatic ordering of garments in an animated interplay between
clothes and clothes, and between clothes and man. Clothes not only envelope man,
they also envelope other clothes in multi-layered compositions. As clothes now
become the metaphor for the philosophy and teachings we take on upon ourselves,
we observe Shih Yaw anticipating better outcomes in the new cloak that religion
has provided for him, exploring endless new directions while he rests
comfortably in God’s fold - In Thee.
