"I coME from over tHERE"
Emerging visual artist Dr
Rajinder Jit Singh displays his collection at the
Pan Pacific Hotel Public Art space. The ink and acrylic paintings exhibit a
fresh new style of the abstact narrative genre influenced by graffitti and
tattoo art. The paintings critically analyse notions of nationality and
citizenship.
The paintings in the exhibition highlight the diversity of worldly
influences of many who have chosen to reside in Singapore and the
refreshingly modern and necessarily global lives that they live. The artist
explores issues surrounding the growing phenomenon of individuals who
transcend boundaries and cultures , who are in a constant state of
progression, has a willingness to co-exist with the less explored, and
nurture a sense of adventure and a thirst for truth, peace and balance.
'In the process of enjoying continual change and discourse, the artist
dedicates much of his art to the rich cultural mix that Singapore offers. He
nurtures a growing optimism for the future as Singapore continues
challenging the hegemony of an "International Style" while transporting the
notion of the "Ethnic" beyond definitions of cultural diversity.'

FIRST ART EXHIBITION AT PUBLIC
ART SPACE
“I coME from over tHERE”
Singapore, 14 November 2005 – The first art exhibition at Public Art Space at
Level 2, Pan Pacific Singapore showcases acrylic paintings by local artist Dr
Rajinder Singh. Titled “I coME from over tHERE”, the collection celebrates a
visual culture with a timeless style; transcending today’s conventional
definitions of Art.
In “I coME from tHERE”, Dr Singh brings to fore the rapidly growing phenomena of
transnationalism which challenges the very nature of citizenship and nationhood.
Having lived a fragmentary life for years in various degrees of lack of comfort,
certitude and settlement, he has located an inner middle ground, a fertile space
for artistic expression. “I relish the fact that I have been denied the comfort
of settled truths for a big part of my life. For me I claim the responsibility
of cultural insurgency to bring in a sense of newness”
With his past exhibitions, 'Gridlocked' and 'Existenz', Dr Singh continues to
question absolute forms of knowledge or systems of thought which purport to be
complete. In “I coME from over tHERE”, he shows that reality is an artifact
which can be made and unmade. The middle ground, the in-between places of his
diasporic condition is explored and celebrated.
